Orchard Hotel Orchard Road

When we landed I was ever so grateful. Baggage arrived despite self labelling , trolleys are free for use unlike the USA and off we went.

My memories of taxis is they were dirt cheap and I planned to utilise them for sight seeing. FORGET it they now have meters , rates, standard charges etc etc . net result S$24 to get to the Hotel where the receptionist informed me rooms are not available until two o’clock and they require a S$300 deposit for any supplrementals I might use. I could pay S$100 and have the room now. Sue did one of her deep intake of breaths th.ngs. There is a complimentary room available where you can shower and change or do anything else you need after a long day but as our toiletries were somewhere in our cases which were by now in the middle of a sea of cases that was no go.

We stooged about until 12 when they took pity on us and let us in to the room. Bliss a shower and a change of clothes. How do you get in such a state sat in a aeroplane ?

Outside we stooged some more only to be accosted by an Australian couple trying to get us to go to Gardens by the bay you get there on the 106 (a bus) . I am always struck how British Singapore is. All the signs , announcements , buses are british. Everybody speaks English and unlike spain is delighted to talk and help a beleaguered Englishmen . fabulous place. Don’t get me wrong. Its not about  Empire or the little Britain , thing. Its about attitude and the Singaporean just that to me at least Singapore doesn’t resent the past , it embrace it as a part of a long history , rolls it all up into being Singaporean , and gets on with the future. The roads have names like race track Road, Buffalo Drive , Kitchener Street, Changi of course
